Eigg Pods – All you Need to Know

If you’re looking for simple, budget-friendly and well-located accommodation on the Isle of Eigg, the Eigg Pods are an excellent option. We stayed here last summer and would definitely stay again. Keep in mind though, that these are simple camping pods, not luxury ones with all home comforts.

Location

The pods sit right above Galmisdale Harbour, so just a couple of minutes’ walk from the ferry and to the island restaurant-café and shop,

The pods are just off the road and within in two enclosed areas and surrounded by greenery, giving you some privacy and gorgeous views over the bay and to the mainland.

There are three pods in total, each with its own name. The one we stayed in was An Sgurr, which sits slightly higher and a little apart from the other two.

The views aren’t quite as open as the lower pods but you have more privacy and still get a clear view when sitting at the picnic bench that’s off to the side. An Sgurr is ideal for a couple or a small family who want a quieter spot or privacy.

The two lower pods, Beinn Buidhe and Beinn Tighe are closer together, which works well if you’re travelling with friends or a larger family and want to rent two pods side by side, or if you just want a better view. (See photo below.)

Outside space

The Eigg camping pods are enclosed by a fence with a gate, which is useful if you’re travelling with a dog or young children. It also means people can’t just wander in.

Outside, there’s a simple grassy area with a picnic bench for eating outdoors. There’s also a simple barbecue pit next to the picnic table. Next to each pod is a small shed area with a covered picnic bench and basic facilities for food prep.

You may find a few leftover essentials such as cooking oil or salt from previous guests but it’s best to pack whatever you’ll need. You can also buy anything else you need from the shop.

Cooking equipment can be rented separately from Eigg Guiding for £15 for two nights if you don’t want to bring your own stuff with you. We booked this in advance and got a small gas stove, frying pan, saucepans and a spatula.

Inside the pods

The pods themselves are basic but well thought out.

Inside, you’ll find:

  • A small fridge
  • Small counter top and shelves
  • An electric kettle
  • Cutlery and crockery
  • Electrical sockets and USB charging points
  • Radiator

For sleeping, there are four rubber-covered mattresses that are easy to clean. Two wooden bench-style beds sit along the sides and at night you can lay wooden boards across for a larger ‘bed’ to lay the mattresses on top, allowing up to four people to sleep. Probably works best for a family with young children though.

Bedding isn’t included in the hire, but you can rent it for an extra fee. We paid for the double option for £20 and it came with a duvet and pillows, all of which were comfortable. It also included towels. There’s also a cheaper sleeping bag option.

Toilets and washing facilities

There are no toilets inside the pods. Instead, you use the main toilet and shower block near the shop and café, which is about a one-minute walk downhill. There’s also an outdoor sink area there for washing dishes and a washing machine and a clothes rack.

The toilet/shower block was modern, clean and well-maintained. Bring your own toiletries, etc. Showers cost £3 for five minutes and are paid for by contactless payment.

Practical details

  • Minimum stay: two nights
  • Price: around £65 per night
  • Getting there: ferry times are key unless you’re arriving by private boat
  • Optional insurance: available when booking for cancellations (we paid around £10 for two nights)

Is it a good base on Eigg?

Yes, absolutely. The pods are well located for exploring the island. From here, it’s easy to walk to:

  • An Sgurr
  • Old Grulin Villages
  • Massacre and Cathedral Caves
  • Kildonan Church
  • Kayaking, snorkelling and diving centre
  • Bike hire points
  • Nature walks that start near the harbour

Being close to the shop and restaurant is also a big plus, especially after a long walk or a day out on the water. You’ll also find some of the islanders hanging out around the café of an evening.

Would I recommend the Eigg Pods?

Yes. They’re simple, comfortable and practical, with a great location and enough privacy to feel relaxed. If you’re happy with shared facilities and like the idea of staying close to the harbour without being right in the middle of things, the Eigg Pods are a very good choice.

If you like you’re creature comforts, you can take a look at other accommodation options mentioned on my main Eigg post here.

The Eigg Pods are a great option if you want somewhere simple, affordable and well located while exploring the island. They’re comfortable without trying to be luxurious, and the location near the harbour, shop and café makes them a very practical base for a few days on Eigg.
