Of course, we hope you get wonderful weather but what if it rains? Here are a few things to do on a rainy day in Arisaig.

Things to do on a Rainy Day in Arisaig with Kids

Land, Sea and Islands Centre

Although the Land, Sea and Islands centre is fairly small, it has a wealth of information in it about the history of the area and how life used to be. If you’re wondering why there’s a memorial to Czech soldiers in Arisaig village, you’ll find the answer here.

Apart from the exhibition, they have an activity room through the back with lots of interesting activities for children to do as well a wildlife camera and several pairs of binoculars.

The attached shop also has a good selection of local interest books – guides, novels and children’s stories and workbooks as well as some lovely local gifts.

The Land, Sea and Islands Centre is in the village opposite the Spar and is open Monday to Sunday, 10 am to 4pm. Entrance is free but you can make a donation to support the work of the centre if you wish. See more on their website here

Mallaig Heritage Centre

Next on our list of things to do on a rainy day in Arisaig is the Mallaig Heritage Centre where you can learn about local history going back ten centuries and other topics of local interest through displays, short films, books, collections and activities.

Mallaig Heritage Centre is near Mallaig Railway Station and is open daily from 11am to 5pm. Entrance is £2.50 for adults and free for children. See more on their website here

Mallaig Pool & Leisure Centre

You don’t have to be a member to use Mallaig pool, you can just pay as you go. They also offer swimming classes if you’re staying for a longer time. Check the timetable before going as some slots are booked off for groups, etc.

Mallaig Pool and Leisure Centre is just off Annie’s Brae next to the high school (up the hill from the harbour and on your right.) It opens daily but times differ. You can see the opening hours, timetable, prices and other activities offered at their website here.

Mallaig Second-hand Bookshop

The second hand book shop is the one place my daughter has to visit rain or shine.

They have a good selection of books for adults, teens and children from classic and contemporary novels to local history and everything in between. You can also usually find jigsaws there too. That’s where most of ours have come from. If you still have a CD or DVD player, they have CDs and DVDs too.

Mallaig second-hand bookshop is inside the Morrison Building near the Co-op. If the shop is closed, there’s a small selection outside with an honesty box. After you’ve bought your books, nip into the cafe for a nice coffee and cake or some lunch.

Archery at Arisaig Archery

Lastly on our list of things to do on a rainy day in Arisaig is Arisaig Archery. If the rain’s not too heavy, this is a good option as the area where you stand is sheltered. You just need to go and retrieve your arrows which is easy enough if it’s just drizzling.

Arisaig Archery is located next to the Arisaig Hotel and you can see more on their website here.

We like to listen to a book on Audibles when doing jigsaws at Arisaig. Below are a few options starting with some that are related to the area around Arisaig and the other parts of Scotland and then some that we have enjoyed over the years.

The links will also show you paperback and kindle versions if that’s what you prefer but if you’re sceptical about audio books, give the free trial a go whether it’s Audibles or something else. I was sceptical too but then loved them and have listened to many over the last few years, both adult and children’s books.

They can make a huge difference to car journeys, especially when you don’t have a radio or internet signal going through the Highlands. They’re definitely my top tip for long car journeys and cutting down the number of times ‘are we there yet?’ is asked!
