My love affair with Arisaig started back in my childhood when we spent our autumn half-term break on Portnadoran farm every year. As a child our favourite things to do in Arisaig were climbing rocks, looking for crabs and poking anemone in rock pools, dodging crashing waves, bursting seaweed pods, making dens on the nearby hills and pretending we were on some exciting adventure with The Famous Five or some other set of book characters.

Climbing rocks is still high up there on my list of best things to do in Arisaig but I probably spend less time looking down now and more time looking up at the wonderful views around me. Whether it’s a clear azure blue sky, one heavy with grey clouds or a streaked orange, pink and red sunset, the view is always simply spectacular.

The combination of clear blue seas, white sand, rolling green hills and mountains looming in the distance, often shrouded in mist, was always a winner for me and the silhouette of Eigg and Rhum is forever etched in my memory with the Cuilin of Skye rising up to the side.

Over the years I’ve taken friends from around the world there to share this little spot of paradise and their favourite things to do around Arisaig are walk on the beautiful white or silver beaches, take a boat trip to Eigg, Knoydart or Skye, eat fish and chips overlooking the harbour at Mallaig, climb the green and sometime purple hills, deer-spotting and, of course, watch the steam train coming in from Fort William.

And so I hope to share with you over time some of the best things to do in Arisaig and hope you might share some of your favourite things to do around Arisaig too.

Look out for photos of beaches, wildlife, trips and information on walks, places to stay, eat, shop and so on. We’ll explore Morar, Mallaig, down to Rhu and take a few boat trips to see the nearby islands and places not accessible by road and a bit of whale and porpoise-spotting too.

I sometimes like to make the journey up or down a day out in itself so I’ll share some stops and shots on the way too.

Feel free to add comments and send your own tips in for the best things to do in Arisaig and your favourite things to do around Arisaig.

But who is behind it all? My name is Alison and I’ve been going to Arisaig since I was a child many many moons ago for holidays and our family have had a home there for 30 years and my daughter now loves it too. I’ve always had a special attachment and I want to help others enjoy it as much as me!
